Prototyping has a long tradition in architecture, industrial design, and engineering, where it facilitates the exploration and understanding of the materials that systems are made of. As such, prototyping is also an essential part of flexible, iterative workflows when designing and building digital products, especially for the ever changing World Wide Web.
